Gewurztraminer Columbia Gorge

$16.00

A dry Gewurztraminer blend of Oak Ridge and Celilo Vineyards. Planted in the 1980’s, it is fermented in tank and barrel. Bottled and released early to showcase the intense aromatics of young Gewurztraminer, it can stand up to foods which are difficult to pair.

Chris Dowsett’s first encounter with Gewürztraminer was not at the table, but in the vineyard—on his family’s new plot in the Willamette Valley. They moved to the farmhouse in 1983, acquiring with it the oldest Gewürz vines in the region. During breaks from school, Chris learned to prune and tend the vines from consultants and books. In the fall, he made their first home wine—five or so hand-bottled cases of dry Gewürtz. He was 15 years old.

A common thread throughout his career has been his devotion to expressive, dry, Alsatian-style Gewürztraminer. He’s worked with the varietal at Stonestreet Vineyards, Canoe Ridge Vineyards, Latitude 46° N, and currently at his own Dowsett Family Winery.

Dowsett works with longtime growing partners to source Gewürztraminer with distinctive varietal character and freshness. During harvest, you can often find him among the vines, tasting and monitoring for the precise moment the fruit is ready to pick.

Since 2007, Dowsett Family Winery has made limited-production, dry Gewürztraminers from the Columbia Gorge of Washington State. They have received many 90+ point scores, a feature in Wine Enthusiast’s Top 100, and frequent praise by critics and fans alike. Wine writer and critic Sean Sullivan calls Dowsett “a Gewürztraminer savant, consistently crafting some of the most compelling offerings in the United States.”
